Creating Tools for AJAX Development

ABSTRACT
Tools for building HTML/Javascript and so-called AJAX-style applications are sparse. Mozilla has traditionally had the best tools in Venkman and its DOM Inspector, but recently development has been stagnant and these tools do not offer integration with active code development.

Newer tools like Firebug offer more clever tools to inspect pages but still have no role in the rest of the development cycle.

The Eclipse AJAX Toolkit Framework brings these types of tools into the Eclipse IDE — making use of the Java XPCOM to Java bridge and leveraging the robust features of Eclipse, while leaving the environment pluggable for more enhancements. The current work will be demonstrated and the architecture will be discussed, with particular attention to the JavaScript debugger and embedding of xulrunner.

The Web is increasingly a ubiquitous platform for application developers. The talk will outline an emerging vision for the Ubiquitous Web and areas where further work is needed. I will also present work I have been doing on a Web-based alternative to Microsoft PowerPoint and its extension to support remote meetings. Finally, I will demonstrate the use of AJAX to add speech capabilities to web browsers and the role of remote speech engines.

Frank Cohen, the leading authority on XML, Platforms, Applications and Database (XPAD) optimization will give a TechTalk at Google on the issues confronting software developers, QA technicians, and IT managers to rapidly surface and solve functional and performance problems in service environments.

Frank will demonstrate the new PushToTest TestMaker Version 5 open- source end-to-end service governance and test automation tool. Software developers use PushToTest to turn their unit tests into functional tests in a test automation platform that runs on their development machine. Frank will demonstrate PushToTest’s Wizards and Recorders to automatically build tests and supports a variety of languages, including Java, .NET, Jython, Groovy, PHP, Ruby, and many others. Plus Frank will show how PushToTest Version 5 supports SOA, Web Service, AJAX, and REST services using HTTP, HTTPS, SOAP, XML- RPC, and the email protocols.

Frank will show how the platform requires no programming to turns these same functional tests into load tests and service monitors for QA technicians, IT operations managers, and CIOs. PushToTest test run- time load tests and service monitors integrate into Service Registry/ Repository products and database performance optimization and root- cause analysis tools.

Glassbox is an open source troubleshooting and monitoring agent for Java apps that diagnoses common problems automatically.

Drop the Glassbox web application into your server and Glassbox’s aspect-oriented programming will discover your existing apps and pinpoint errors and performance issues in plain English. Using AspectJ, Glassbox can provide low overhead effective monitoring without needing to "bake in" instrumentation up front–no code changes or recompilation is needed. Glassbox includes an analysis layer, an Ajax web-client and an automated installer. It is open source and modular, so contributors can add monitors for more problems or additional analysis as desired for their own projects.

Glassbox’s goal is to automate the daily grunt work of troubleshooting common problems, and free the expert to get back to solving the core technical problems. This talk will illustrate how Glassbox 2.0 identifies problems, how to integrate it into an existing monitoring environment, and how it can be extended to better analyze custom applications without code changes.

XML11: An Abstract Windowing Protocol

ABSTRACT
This presentation introduces XML11, an abstract windowing protocol inspired by the X11-protocol develop by MIT. XML11 is an XML-based protocol that allows asynchronous UI updates of widgets to an end-device. To overcome high-latency connections, XML11 allows migration of application logic to the end-device.

The prototype implementation of XML11 runs in any standard web browser without Java capabilities on the client-side and replaces AWT/Swing on the server-side. This also allows us to expose legacy AWT/Swing applications as web applications. Ultimately XML11 can be used for writing Ajax applications withoutrequiring any JavaScript knowledge. The prototype implementation of XML11 is released under the GPL and available at www.xml11.org

ABSTRACT

Faith and evolution provide complementary–and sometimes conflicting–models of the world, and they also can model the adoption of programming languages. Adherents of competing paradigms, such as functional and object-oriented programming, often appear motivated by faith. Families of related languages, such as C, C++, Java, and C#, may arise from pressures of evolution. As designers of languages, adoption rates provide us with scientific data, but the belief that elegant designs are better is a matter of faith. This talk traces one concept, second-order quantification, from its inception in the symbolic logic of Frege through to the generic features introduced in Java 5, touching on features of faith and evolution. The remarkable correspondence between natural deduction and functional programming informed the design of type classes in Haskell. Generics in Java evolved directly from Haskell type classes, and are designed to support evolution from legacy code to generic code. Links, a successor to Haskell aimed at AJAX-style three-tier web applications, aims to reconcile some of the conflict between dynamic and static approaches to typing.
