The Edubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Edubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.

I made this video by VNCing from my XP machine over to my Edubuntu machine on my network. I recorded the VNC session using Demostudio. If there was an equally easy to use and powerful screencasting tool for Linux that offered mpeg recording then I’d use that instead. Please post your own screencasts on how to use Linux! There are so many curious people about Linux but many have never seen it in action! Make a screen cast and post your own successes, and failures, under Linux.

ABSTRACT
The desirability of making IP networking easy to use has been obvious for many years, but achieving that goal has proved elusive. One day, Stuart Cheshire got tired of fellow Stanford Computer Science PhD students wanting to print from his Mac (via AppleTalk) because they couldn’t work out how to configure their Linux /etc/printcap files to access the network printer they wanted to use via IP, and he decided it was time someone did something about it.

Thus began a long saga, beginning with the formation of the IETF "Zero Configuration Networking" working group, and ending where we are today, with widespread adoption of Stuart Cheshire’s Multicast DNS and DNS Service Discovery technology, or "Bonjour", as Apple likes to call it. Today just about every network printer from just about every printer vendor supports Bonjour, and ships with it enabled by default.
video

Google Tech Talks
December 1, 2006

ABSTRACT

In late 2001, Microsoft released the Xbox, their first gaming console, to compete against Sony and Nintendo in the living room. As the real money is made with the games and not the consoles, Microsoft had to make sure (as much as they could) that nobody could play pirated games or use the machine for anything other than games. Although the original security design idea was a good one and has been copied a lot since then, Microsoft’s inexperienced team made a variety of design, implementation, and policy mistakes. This talk first (re)constructs the design of the Xbox security system from Microsoft’s point of view, and then deconstructs it from the hacker’s point of view. As a bonus, the talk will feature some insights in the security system of the Xbox successor, the Xbox 360.

Michael Steil is the founder and maintainer of the Xbox-Linux Project. He oversaw most of the Xbox hacks and also contributed to hacking, reverse engineering and porting Linux on the Xbox.
video
Jay Pipes is a co-author of the recently published Pro MySQL (Apress, 2005), which covers all of the newest MySQL 5 features, as well as in-depth discussion and analysis of the MySQL server architecture, storage engines, transaction procesing, benchmarking, and advanced SQL scenarios. You can also see his name on articles appearing in Linux Magazine and can read more articles about MySQL at his website.

ABSTRACT
Learn where to best focus your attention when tuning the performance of your applications and database servers, and how to effectively find the "low hanging fruit" on the tree of bottlenecks. It’s not rocket science, but with a bit of acquired skill and experience, and of course good habits, you too can do this magic! Jay Pipes is MySQL’s Community Relations Manager for North America.
video

ABSTRACT

When you have hundreds of people simultaneously patching 25000 files of the Linux Kernel in sometimes conflicting ways, you might need some scheme or plan to sort all that out before you can build your next kernel and reboot. The Linux team uses "git" for their source code repository management, a homegrown solution that is optimized for highly distributed development, working with huge sets of files, merging independent work at multiple levels, and seeing who broke what. (Git has also since been notably adopted by the Cairo, x.org, and Wine teams, and is being transitioned to by the Mozilla codebase.)

In my talk, I describe what "git"; is and isn’t, and why you should use it instead of CVS, Subversion, SVK, Arch, Darcs, Mercurial, Monotone, Bazaar, and just about every other repository manager. I’ll also walk though the basic concepts so that the manpages might start making sense. If I have time, I’ll even do a live walkthrough, where you can watch how fast I make typos.

ABSTRACT
The web 2.0 bubble inflates as geeks pump out an astonishing number of web-based solutions to daily problems. But a lot of these solutions only appeal to a small niche. What goes into a service that appeals to a broad range of people?

How can it start and grow without a generous helping of capital? The two guys behind BillMonk.com, a service for helping friends with the casual borrowing of money and stuff, will share their views from the trenches. They will share the story of what it took to quit their comfy jobs at Amazon, how a handful of philosophical axioms dictated the entire site design and interface, anthropological observations about the 18-26 year-old demographic with respect to money and computers, and some of the technical challenges they’ve faced. There will be room for discussion about Ruby, Linux, when to open-source parts of your platform, and business lessons for geeks.
video

Scott McPeak

ABSTRACT
This talk will cover three pieces of infrastructure for writing static analyses for C++. All are available as open source. Elkhound is a Generalized LR (GLR) parser generator. Its input is a grammar augmented with reduction actions written in C++. The GLR algorithm works with any context-free grammar, even ambiguous grammars. The user provides additional actions to resolve ambiguities that may arise during parsing. Elsa is a C++ parser written using Elkhound. It solves many of the classic parsing challenges of C and C++ by using an ambiguous grammar, delaying much of the disambiguation until the type checking phase.

Not only does this lead to a cleaner design, the use of a parsing grammar lends itself naturally to language extensions, grammar fragments that pertain to specific language dialects (for example, GCC extensions). The use of extensions is ideal in a research setting. Finally, Cqual++ is a static analysis tool built on top of Elsa. It is a port of the older Cqual tool. It takes advantage of the Elsa extension mechanisms to process Cqual++ annotations, traverse the parsed AST, and then generate qualifier constraints that are solved by a general-purpose back end. It has been used to find a number of security bugs in the Linux kernel.
video

ABSTRACT

2007 Google Seattle Conference on Scalability:
Lustre File System
Speaker: Peter Braam, Cluster File Systems, Inc.

Lustre is a scalable open source Linux cluster file system that
powers 6 of the top 10 computers in the world. It is resold by HP,
SUN, Dell and many other OEM and storage companies, yet
produced by a small powerful technology company, Cluster File
Systems, Inc. This lecture will explain the Lustre architecture and
then focus on how scalability was achieved. We will address many
aspects of scalability mostly from the field and some from future
requirements, from having 25,000 clients in the Red Storm
computer to offering exabytes of storage. Performance is an
important focus and we will discuss how Lustre serves up over
100GB/sec today going to 100TB/sec in the coming years. It will
deliver millions of metadata operations per second in a cluster and,
write 10′s of thousands of small files per second on a single node. If
you like big numbers (but less than a Gogol) please come to this
talk.
video

ABSTRACT

Learn about New Zealand from two of their biggest open-source developers and evangelists (and who have naturally starred in The Lord Of The Rings.)

Sam Minnee and Sigurd Magnusson are two of the three founders of New-Zealand based "SilverStripe", a company and open source project with ten students participating in this year’s Google Summer of Code.

They will share wisdom learnt managing people in an open source project, share ideas from developing a rich web interface and templating system, and stories from wearing the ring of darkness.
Sigurd has been living and breathing free software since his teens in the 1990s, discovering a 486 with Redhad Linux could run Quake fast enough to frag others at LAN games. His grandma taught him BASIC and C and got him access to a precursor of New Zealand’s first ISPs, which culminated years later with founding SilverStripe, an open source web-development company bent on making fantastic applications to simplify building and managing websites. Having let a dozen others at SilverStripe surpass him at PHP, Sigurd has now been charged with building up the SilverStripe community and producing other things, like daughters.
Sam is the lead architect of SilverStripe and has challenged the manner in which software is constructed ever since he began programming in his teens. Armed with a degree in computer science and philosophy, Sam has been mentoring and guiding the development of a dozen coders, hundreds of websites, and hundreds of thousands of lines of code. He has a firm grasp on intelligently structuring code as well as producing useful, enjoyable system interfaces, particularly helpful in the challenge of making SilverStripe a great tool for building and managing websites.
video
I will cover the topic of connection to the Public Switched Telephony Network using digital interfaces (E1/T1), kernel support for it in framework called "zaptel", and userspace integration issues. The conclusion is about current trends in Linux-based and open-source telephony.

ABSTRACT

Andrew will present a broad look at the trends in recent changes in the Linux kernel: what areas of kernel functionality are people working on, and what changes can we expect to see over the next year ?

This feature-by-feature walk-through will be tied to an examination of the motivations of the kernel contributors: why do particular individuals and organizations choose particular things to work upon ?

He will also examine areas of the kernel which are arguably suffering from some neglect, the reasons for this and some possible corrective actions which might be taken.

Andrew will finish with a discussion of the importance of individual testers to the kernel development effort, as well as a look at the steps which a kernel tester should take to maximize the effectiveness of his or her contribution to the kernel.
video

Google Tech Talks
July 31, 2007

ABSTRACT

Software developers usually confine themselves to working entirely within the runtime environment of a computer just pushing around bits and pixels. Even virtual worlds such as Second Life exist only in the confines of our CPUs.

On the other hand, hardware hacking has really taken off in recent years and there are now magazines such as MAKE devoted to modifying everyday objects. It’s a lot easier than software jockeys may expect, and this talk will begin with an entertaining exploration of simple ways to get started with linking a computer to real-world objects.

But what happens when you knock down the boundaries between the real world and a virtual world? The talk goes on to show specific techniques and examples for linking real-world objects into the Second Life environment so that changes in the real world can be reflected in SL and vice versa.
Jonathan Oxer is founder of Internet Vision Technologies, author of "How To Build A Website And Stay Sane" ( www.stay-sane.com) and "Ubuntu Hacks" (www.ubuntuhacks.com), is currently President of Linux Australia, convened the last 5 Debian Miniconferences, and sits on various boards and advisory panels for groups including Swinburne University and the federal e-Research Coordinating Committee.
video

Han Reiser

Hans Reiser was concerned that hierarchical and relational naming systems add structure not inherent in the information, and that boolean algebra fails to represent structure, and so he develeoped a set of semantics which attempt to match rather than mold structure.

He then founded Namesys in 1993 when he went to Russia and hired a small team of programmers to implement the storage layer for these semantics, known as the Reiserfs filesystem for Linux. He spent 5 years arguing over algorithms on evenings and weekends, and working day jobs in Silicon Valley, and then finally the code started to work well enough that he could quit the day jobs.

Then he took all the code, chucked it, and rewrote it from scratch to reflect what he had learned the first time doing it. The new code is called Reiser4.

ABSTRACT
The ReiserFS project aims to add support for semi-structured data querying to the filesystem namespace. Reiser4 is the storage layer for this. It stores all files in a dancing (not balanced)tree, and is currently the overall fastest filesystem for traditional filesystem usage patterns.
video

Today just about every network printer from just about every printer vendor supports Bonjour, and ships with it enabled by default.
video

Google TechTalks
April 11, 2006

It has been used to find a number of security bugs in the Linux kernel.
video

There will be room for discussion about Ruby, Linux, when to open-source parts of your platform, and business lessons for geeks.

Jay Pipes is MySQL’s Community Relations Manager for North America.
video

The Edubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Edubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.–http://www.edubuntu.org/

Google TechTalks
February 6, 2006

It stores all files in a dancing (not balanced)tree, and is currently the overall fastest filesystem for traditional filesystem usage patterns.
video

I made this video by VNCing from my XP machine over to my Edubuntu machine on my network. I recorded the VNC session using Demostudio. If there was an equally easy to use and powerful screencasting tool for Linux that offered mpeg recording then I’d use that instead. Please post your own screencasts on how to use Linux! There are so many curious people about Linux but many have never seen it in action! Make a screen cast and post your own successes, and failures, under Linux.
