Dr. Schneider is one of the world’s leading scientific experts of climate change (his name is cited on all those climate change charts and graphs we’ve seen so far). Dr. Heller has extensive experience with policy and negotiations surrounding climate change and sustainable development. Professor Heller also recently served as Sergey’s host at the recent UN Climate Change Conference meeting in Montreal where Prof. Heller proved his indepth knowledge of thenuances of legislative works, such as the Kyoto Protocol, and the mechanisms that are currently being employed.

This tech talk will be different than our previous climate change talks. These men have helped steered the international course of policy, scientific verifications and the overall consensus on the existence of climate change. They both have plenty to say about what the failures and successes have been along the way, and what their predictions for the future of climate change policy will be.
ABSTRACT

The computer desktop metaphor is ubiquitous, but how much work do we get done there? None! Time is entirely wasted navigating or shuffling content to the application in which we can finally work. What lessons can we learn from designing interfaces without the desktop and without applications? Is it even possible? And how does this apply to the Web? Currently, Web applications are often more usable than their desktop-based counterparts because each one does one thing and does it well. Desktop applications used to be the same way, but over time — as applications grew to support the the users in the long tail — each became a complex portmanteau of all possible features. If we are not careful, our Web apps will suffer the same conglomerated fate. Mashups and services help to solve the problem on the development end by freeing functionality from any particular application. But, there is currently no way to offer that wealth of possible functionality to users in a scalable way. Would it be nice to embed a dynamic map into your Gmail message? Sure. A Flickr slideshow? Sure. But for Google to offer those in addition to the hundreds of other possible options, would clutter the interface beyond usability. What’s needed is a universal method of accessing functionality: a way of harnessing the power of services without the need for application developers to explicitly support them. I’ll be demonstrating such a method.

The talk demonstrates that a ZUI plus a universal method of accessing functionality spells the death of the application-centric computing model and the desktop-design paradigms.
video

If you’ve enjoyed Hal’s talks and emails on how economic theory can help make sense of various financial phenomenon around us from the US real estate bubble to zero-coupon bonds; come listen to Prof. Waverman from the London Business School talk about how mobile technology can impact economic growth in emerging markets. His work was recently profiled in The Economist. Prof. Waverman visits Google in Mountain View courtesy of efforts by Yonca Brunini and Dennis Woodside from our EMEA offices.

Professor Waverman’s research quantifiably demonstrates that communications networks form a key component of the infrastructure crucial to a nation’s economic growth, joining the ranks of roads and electricity. In Friday’s talk, we’ll see promising signs that the explosion of mobile telephony across the developing world is shrinking the digital divide and providing real opportunity for economic growth in the world’s poorest regions. Prepare to be impressed by research profiled in The Economist, wowed by ingenious and vital applications of mobile telephony, and challenged to make the world’s information accessible and useful to those whose lives it could benefit the most.
video

ABSTRACT
Many people are curators, consciously or not, of large and growing collections of personal information. People collect articles, books, magazines, recipes, songs, pictures, etc. They collect still more information with no clear subordinating category other than "stuff".

Or, perhaps more accurately, the information itself "collects". People can have gigabytes of storage representing email messages, electronic documents and various other files. They may have large numbers of references that point to information on the Web. And people often still have large amounts of information on paper.

This talk will describe exploratory research to understand better how people manage ever larger collections of their personal information, the kinds of problems people encounter as they do so, and the kinds of support people need in order to "manage" better ? to manage not only the information but the various activities for which this information is needed.
video

Alan Karp

Principle Scientist Hewlett-Packard Laboratories Dr. Karp has been leading the Virus Safe Computing Initiative at HP Labs since 2003. He served as Chief Scientist of HP’s E-speak Operation from June 1999 until April 2000, at which time he returned to HP Laboratories to work on automated negotiation. Before working on E-speak, Dr. Karp participated in developing the EPIC chip architecture, the basis of Intel’s Itanium line.

ABSTRACT
HP Labs encourages activities considered to be outside the mainstream. Our group, the Virus Safe Computing Initiative, takes a view of security that is quite different from that of the official HP and HP Labs security teams. This talk will explore the concept of Authorization Based Access Control (ABAC) and demonstrate a number of novel technologies that emerge from this school of thought.

Our primary project is Polaris, a virus safe computing environment for Windows. Derived from the ABAC-based CapDesk system described in a later talk in this series, Polaris limits the potential damage of many common attacks. The result is a computing system with far less damage from malicious code you may happen to run, fewer security dialog boxes to interfere with your work, and more functionality, such as the freedom to launch executable attachments from email without risking your machine.
video

ABSTRACT

So we’re all agreed. Blogs: good; email: bad. Wikis: good; sending round attachments to a dozen people and then having to merge all the changes by hand afterwards: bad.

But despite the labour-saving wonders of social software, many people – even those who otherwise pounce on every new technological innovation – prefer to stick with the old way of doing things. What’s stopping them from adopting blogs and wikis as a way of getting things done? It can’t be the tool, because the tools are easy. So what scary monsters are lurking in the social software closet, ready to leap out at the innocent project leader, fangs and claws to the fore?

Speaker: Suw Charman
Suw Charman is a social software expert specialising in the use of blogs and wikis in business. She’s worked with companies in the UK and US – in the tech, travel, media, financial and public relations sectors – to help them understand how social software can be used both behind the firewall and for customer communications.

Suw writes about social software, the media, publishing, and other related subects at Strange Attractor (strange.corante.com, with her partner Kevin Anderson), and also keeps a personal blog, Chocolate and Vodka, (chocnvodka.blogware.com).

A passionate digital rights advocate, Suw co-founded the Open Rights Group in July 2005 with the aim of raising awareness of digital rights issues, running campaigns and supporting grass roots activism.
video

Frank Cohen, the leading authority on XML, Platforms, Applications and Database (XPAD) optimization will give a TechTalk at Google on the issues confronting software developers, QA technicians, and IT managers to rapidly surface and solve functional and performance problems in service environments.

Frank will demonstrate the new PushToTest TestMaker Version 5 open- source end-to-end service governance and test automation tool. Software developers use PushToTest to turn their unit tests into functional tests in a test automation platform that runs on their development machine. Frank will demonstrate PushToTest’s Wizards and Recorders to automatically build tests and supports a variety of languages, including Java, .NET, Jython, Groovy, PHP, Ruby, and many others. Plus Frank will show how PushToTest Version 5 supports SOA, Web Service, AJAX, and REST services using HTTP, HTTPS, SOAP, XML- RPC, and the email protocols.

Frank will show how the platform requires no programming to turns these same functional tests into load tests and service monitors for QA technicians, IT operations managers, and CIOs. PushToTest test run- time load tests and service monitors integrate into Service Registry/ Repository products and database performance optimization and root- cause analysis tools.
video

2007 Google Seattle Conference on Scalability:
Lessons In Building Scalable Systems
Speaker: Reza Behforooz

Since launching Google Talk in the summer of 2005, we have
integrated the service with two large existing products: Gmail and
orkut. Each of these integrations provided unique scalability
challenges as we had to handle a sudden big increase in the
number of users. Today, Google Talk supports millions of users and
handles billions of packets per day. I will discuss several practical
lessons and key insights from our experience that can be used for
any project. These lessons will cover both engineering and
operational areas.

Reza Behforooz is a Staff Engineer at Google and is currently the
technical lead for the Google Talk servers. He’s passionate about
building large systems and working on communication products in
an attempt to make the world a smaller place. While at Google, he has primarily worked on Google Talk, Gmail, orkut, Google Groups,
and shared infrastructure used by several Google applications.
Reza holds a BS from Cornell and a MS from Stanford in Computer
Science. Prior to Google, he held various engineering and
management positions at Microsoft and two startups, Zaplet and
Epiphany.
video

Meng Weng Wong & Julian Haight

Meng Weng Wong is an email geek. He started pobox.com in 1995 and karmasphere.com in 2005. He is responsible for SPF, the email authentication standard which was embraced and extended by Microsoft to form Sender ID. He recently moved from Philadelphia to Silicon Valley to work on Karmasphere, the open reputation network for the Internet.

Julian Haight founded SpamCop.net, the impossible spam-reporting service. He is currently working on a book dealing with network security. Before SpamCop, he worked as a private consultant developing small interactive web-sites. He has always been concerned with privacy and security.

ABSTRACT
A decade ago, DJB proposed IM2000: what if mail storage were the sender’s responsibility? Since then, spam *= bignum, blogs were invented, and RSS is now sex on a stick. Let’s say an RSS blog is just like a one-to-many public mailing list, but over HTTP pull. Now imagine what one-to-one private asynchronous messaging might look like, over HTTP pull. A few months ago Meng Weng Wong (spf.pobox.com), Julian Haight (spamcop.net), and others got together to build an opensource prototype of the system. Meng will discuss the philosophy, architecture, and implementation of the prototype.
video
Internet Crime is a serious and growing problem. Phishing, Advance Fee and Consumer fraud continue to grow at alarming rates. Internet crime is a business that makes huge profits for some. But despite the fact that security has regularly polled as almost every type of Internet user’s top priority over the past ten years, almost none of the security mechanisms developed in response are effectively controlling Internet crime.
video
