I made this video by VNCing from my XP machine over to my Edubuntu machine on my network. I recorded the VNC session using Demostudio. If there was an equally easy to use and powerful screencasting tool for Linux that offered mpeg recording then I’d use that instead. Please post your own screencasts on how to use Linux! There are so many curious people about Linux but many have never seen it in action! Make a screen cast and post your own successes, and failures, under Linux.

Abstract
Please join two distinguished Stanford Professors, Dr. Stephen Schneider and Professor Thomas Heller, for a discussion on climate change and the emerging carbon trading markets. Dr. Schneider is one of the world’s leading scientific experts of climate change (his name is cited on all those climate change charts and graphs we’ve seen so far). Dr. Heller has extensive experience with policy and negotiations surrounding climate change and sustainable development. Professor Heller also recently served as Sergey’s host at the recent UN Climate Change Conference meeting in Montreal where Prof. Heller proved his indepth knowledge of thenuances of legislative works, such as the Kyoto Protocol, and the mechanisms that are currently being employed.

This tech talk will be different than our previous climate change talks. These men have helped steered the international course of policy, scientific verifications and the overall consensus on the existence of climate change. They both have plenty to say about what the failures and successes have been along the way, and what their predictions for the future of climate change policy will be. Email me if you have any questions.
video

ABSTRACT
Part 1 – Introduction to MySQL Cluster The NDB storage engine (MySQL Cluster) is a high-availability storage engine for MySQL. It provides synchronous replication between storage nodes and many mysql servers having a consistent view of the database. In 4.1 and 5.0 it’s a main memory database, but in 5.1 non-indexed attributes can be stored on disk. NDB also provides a lot of determinism in system resource usage. I’ll talk a bit about that.

Part 2 – New features in 5.1 including cluster to cluster replication, disk based data and a bunch of other things. anybody that is attending the mysql users conference may find this eerily familiar.
video

ABSTRACT

One of the challenges that the Internet raises is the necessity of designing distributed protocols for settings where the participating computers are owned and operated by different owners with different goals. Over the last decade or so there has been much research that aims to address these issues using ideas taken from the micro-economic field of mechanism design. In this talk I will survey the current state of the field: how mechanism design is applied in computational settings, how far can classical ideas go, and what are the challenges for further research. Among the applications discussed will be combinatorial auctions, cost sharing, scheduling, and routing in networks.
video

Mitchel Resnick, Professor of Learning Research at the MIT Media Laboratory, develops new technologies and activities to engage people (especially children) in creative learning experiences. Resnicks Lifelong Kindergarten research group developed ideas and technologies underlying the LEGO Mindstorms and PicoCricket construction kits. He co-founded the Computer Clubhouse project, a network of after-school centers where youth from low-income communities learn to express themselves creatively with new technologies. Resnick earned a BA in physics at Princeton University (1978), and MS and PhD degrees in computer science at MIT (1988, 1992). Resnick has consulted throughout the world on the use of computers in education. He is author of Turtles, Termites, and Traffic Jams (1994), co-editor of Constructionism in Practice (1996), and co-author of Adventures in Modeling (2001).

ABSTRACT
In the 1980s, many people talked about the transition from the "Industrial Society" to the "Information Society." In the 1990s, people began to talk about the "Knowledge Society." But as I see it, we are now in a transition towards the "Creative Society." Success in the future (for individuals, for companies, for nations as a whole) will be based not on what we know or how much we know, but on our ability to think and act creatively. Unfortunately, current educational practices are woefully inadequate. In this talk, I will discuss new technologies and new educational initiatives designed specifically to help children develop as creative thinkers — so that they are prepared for life in the Creative Society. I will focus especially on two projects we are developing at the MIT Media Lab: (1) a new programming language, called Scratch, that makes it easier for kids to create animated stories, games, and interactive art — and share their creations with one another online ( http://scratch.mit.edu), and (2) a new breed of construction kit that combines art and technology, enabling kids to create musical sculptures, interactive jewelry, and other artistic inventions — and learn important math, science, and engineering ideas in the process. For more information, see scratch.mit.edu and www.picocricket.com and llk.media.mit.edu
video

ABSTRACT
We investigate the "generalized second price" auction (GSP), a new mechanism which is used by search engines to sell online advertising that most Internet users encounter daily. GSP is tailored to its unique environment, and neither the mechanism nor the environment have previously been studied in the mechanism design literature. Although GSP looks similar to the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism, its properties are very different. In particular, unlike the VCG mechanism, GSP generally does not have an equilibrium in dominant strategies, and truth-telling is not an equilibrium of GSP. To analyze the properties of GSP in a dynamic environment, we describe the generalized English auction that corresponds to the GSP and show that it has a unique equilibrium. This is an ex post equilibrium that results in the same payoffs to all players as the dominant strategy equilibrium of VCG.
video

ABSTRACT

An overview of the field of market design

Speaker: Al Roth
Al Roth is the George Gund Professor of Economics and Business Administration in the Department of Economics at Harvard University, and in the Harvard Business School. His research, teaching, and consulting interests are in game theory, experimental economics, and market design. The best known of the markets he has designed (or, in this case, redesigned) is the National Resident Matching Program, through which approximately twenty thousand doctors a year find their first employment as residents at American hospitals. He has recently been involved in the reorganization of the market for Gastroenterology fellows, which started using a clearinghouse in 2006 for positions beginning in 2007. He helped design the high school matching system used in New York City to match approximately ninety thousand students to high schools each year, starting with students entering high school in the Fall of 2004. He helped redesign the matching system used in Boston Public Schools, adopted for students starting school in September 2006. He is one of the founders and designers of the New England Program for Kidney Exchange, for incompatible patient-donor pairs. He is the chair of the American Economic Association’s Ad Hoc Committee on the Job Market, which has designed a number of recent changes in the market for new Ph.D. economists. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society, and has been a Guggenheim and Sloan fellow. He received his Ph.D at Stanford University, and came to Harvard from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was the Andrew Mellon Professor of Economics.
video

ABSTRACT

If happiness is an inner state, influenced by external conditions but not dependent on them, how can we achieve it? Ricard will examine the inner and outer factors that increase or diminish our sense of well-being, dissect the underlying mechanisms of happiness, and lead us to a way of looking at the mind itself based on his book, Happiness: A Guide to Life’s Most Important Skill and from the research in neuroscience on the effect of mind-training on the brain.

Speaker Bio: Matthieu Ricard, a gifted scientist turned Buddhist monk, is a best selling author, translator, and photographer. He has lived and studied in the Himalayas for the last 35 years where he currently works on humanitarian projects.
ABSTRACT

If you’ve enjoyed Hal’s talks and emails on how economic theory can help make sense of various financial phenomenon around us from the US real estate bubble to zero-coupon bonds; come listen to Prof. Waverman from the London Business School talk about how mobile technology can impact economic growth in emerging markets. His work was recently profiled in The Economist. Prof. Waverman visits Google in Mountain View courtesy of efforts by Yonca Brunini and Dennis Woodside from our EMEA offices.

Professor Waverman’s research quantifiably demonstrates that communications networks form a key component of the infrastructure crucial to a nation’s economic growth, joining the ranks of roads and electricity. In Friday’s talk, we’ll see promising signs that the explosion of mobile telephony across the developing world is shrinking the digital divide and providing real opportunity for economic growth in the world’s poorest regions. Prepare to be impressed by research profiled in The Economist, wowed by ingenious and vital applications of mobile telephony, and challenged to make the world’s information accessible and useful to those whose lives it could benefit the most.
video

ABSTRACT

2007 Google Seattle Conference on Scalability:
Using MapReduce on Large Geographic Datasets
Speaker: Barry Brumitt, Google, Inc.

MapReduce is a programming model and library designed to
simplify distributed processing of huge datasets on large clusters of
computers. This is achieved by providing a general mechanism
which largely relieves the programmer from having to handle
challenging distributed computing problems such as data
distribution, process coordination, fault tolerance, and scaling. While
working on Google maps, I’ve used MapReduce extensively to
process and transform datasets which describe the earth’s
geography. In this talk, I’ll introduce MapReduce, demonstrating its
broad applicability through example problems ranging from basic
data transformation to complex graph processing, all the in the
context of geographic data.
video

Washington Taylor

ABSTRACT
Recent developments in string theory, combined with the experimental observation that the rate of expansion of the universe is increasing, have led theoretical physicists to a radical (and controversial) new picture of the universe. In this new picture, the universe is enormously larger than our parochial observable region of radius 13.7 light years.

In other patches of the universe, the laws of physics may be quite different, though in each patch the local physics is governed by a metastable solution of string theory. Since there may be something like $10^{1000}$ or more distinct solutions of string theory giving physics roughly like that we observe, to make physical predictions we need to classify enormous numbers of possible solutions.

In this talk this new theoretical picture of cosmology will be described, and related computational problems will be discussed.
video

ABSTRACT
The central token of information in Chemistry is a chemical substance, an entity that can often be represented as a well-defined chemical structure. With InChI we have a means of representing this entity as a unique string of characters, which is otherwise represented by various of 2-D and 3-D chemical drawings, ‘connection tables’ and synonyms. InChI therefore represents a discrete physical entity, to which is associated as array of chemical properties and data. NIST has long been involved in disseminating chemical reference data associated with such discrete substances. A InChI is therefore the key index to this data. Many other types of data and information are also naturally tied to it, including biological information, commercial availability, toxicity, drug effectiveness and so forth. Because of the diversity of properties and interactions of a chemical substance, effective location of chemical information generally requires further qualifiers, which may be represented coarsely as a key word, but more precisely using a controlled vocabulary. There are no simple separations between information sought by difference disciplines and for different objectives. However, reference data may be organized according the disciplines most directly involved in making the measurements: -isolated substance – mass, infrared, NMR, spectra; physical properties -substance in the context of others – solubility, affinity, .. -properties of a mixture containing the substance The desired data can be a number, vector or image, usually associated with dimensions and links to source information. In some cases, this information is typically converted to a curve or diagram for use by an expert and may be further processed by specialized software. In other cases, a single numerical values is the target. Also, some complexities of structure that must be dealt with in practical search is represented in InChI, but must be decoded for use in searching.

ABSTRACT

The Net is the global network, which enables users worldwide to interact with information. As new technologies mature, the functions of the protocols deepen, moving closer to cyberspace visions of "being one with all the world’s knowledge". The Evolution of the Net has already proceeded from data transmission in the Internet to information retrieval in the Web. The global protocols are evolving towards knowledge navigation in the Interspace, moving from syntax to semantics. In the future, infrastructure will support analysis, for interactive correlations across knowledge sources. This moves closer towards "telesophy", (transparent infrastructure for) knowledge at a distance.

Getting from here to there will require a paradigm shift from central to distributed, from searching universal archives to navigating community repositories. Central archives partially survived the transition from a million repositories to a billion, but distributed indexing is necessary to scale to a trillion repositories in the next generation. Supporting scalable semantics requires divide-and-conquer to capture local context as an approximation to global meaning. Concept switches in the Interspace are the analogue of packet switches in the Internet, since user interaction is at the level of logical spaces rather than physical networks. This talk will describe the research technologies and trends creating the global infrastructure, with suggestions for hero experiments and hints at the new world of the near future.

Bruce Schatz is Director of the CANIS (Community Architectures for Network Information Systems) Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has been working on federating all the world’s knowledge by building pioneering research systems in industrial and academic settings. These include the first large-scale prototype for federating syntax (Telesophy at Bellcore in the 1980s), structure (DeLIver at UIUC in the 1990s), and semantics (BeeSpace at UIUC in the 2000s).
George Wolberg

http://www-cs.engr.ccny.cuny.edu/~wolberg/

ABSTRACT
The photorealistic modeling of large-scale scenes, such as urban structures, requires a fusion of range sensing technology and traditional digital photography. In this talk, we describe a system that integrates multiview geometry and automated 3D registration techniques for texture mapping 2D images onto 3D range data. The 3D range scans and the 2D photographs are respectively used to generate a pair of 3D models of the scene. The first model consists of a dense 3D point cloud, produced by using a 3D-to-3D registration method that matches 3D lines in the range images. The second model consists of a sparse 3D point cloud, produced by applying a multiview geometry (structure-from-motion) algorithm directly on a sequence of 2D photographs.

This alignment is necessary to enable the photographs to be optimally texture mapped onto the dense model. The contribution of this work is that it merges the benefits of multiview geometry with automated registration of 3D range scans to produce photo-realistic models with minimal human interaction. We present results from experiments in large-scale urban scenes.

Google Tech talks
August 1, 2007

ABSTRACT

Life is very likely the most complex phenomenon in the Universe manifesting an extraordinary diversity of form and function over an enormous range. Yet, many of its most fundamental and complex attributes scale with size in a surprisingly simple fashion. For example, metabolic rate (the power required to sustain the system) scales as approximately the 3/4-power of mass over 27 orders of magnitude from molecular levels up to the largest multicellular organisms. Similarly, time-scales, such as lifespans and growth-rates, increase with exponents which are typically simple powers of 1/4. It will be shown how these universal quarter-power scaling laws follow from fundamental generic principles embedded in the dynamics and geometry of underlying networks, leading to a general quantitative theory that captures essential features of many diverse biological systems. Examples will include animal and plant vascular systems, growth, cancer, aging and mortality, sleep, DNA nucleotide substitution rates. These ideas will be extended to discuss social organisations such as cities and firms: to what extent, if at all, can we think of these as very large organisms and therefore as an extension of biology? Analogues to metabolic rate and behavioral times in cities scale counter to their behaviour in biology. Driven by innovation and the creation of wealth this has dramatic implications for their growth, development, sustainability and pace of life which, left unchecked, potentially sow the seeds for their collapse.
Geoffrey West is a theoretical physicist whose primary interests have been in fundamental questions in physics, especially those concerning the elementary particles, their interactions and cosmological implications. Prior to joining the Santa Fe Institute as a Distinguished Professor in 2003, he was the leader, and founder, of the high energy physics group at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he is one of only approximately ten Senior Fellows.
video

ABSTRACT
This talk will cover three pieces of infrastructure for writing static analyses for C++. All are available as open source. Elkhound is a Generalized LR (GLR) parser generator. Its input is a grammar augmented with reduction actions written in C++. The GLR algorithm works with any context-free grammar, even ambiguous grammars. The user provides additional actions to resolve ambiguities that may arise during parsing. Elsa is a C++ parser written using Elkhound. It solves many of the classic parsing challenges of C and C++ by using an ambiguous grammar, delaying much of the disambiguation until the type checking phase.

Not only does this lead to a cleaner design, the use of a parsing grammar lends itself naturally to language extensions, grammar fragments that pertain to specific language dialects (for example, GCC extensions). The use of extensions is ideal in a research setting. Finally, Cqual++ is a static analysis tool built on top of Elsa. It is a port of the older Cqual tool. It takes advantage of the Elsa extension mechanisms to process Cqual++ annotations, traverse the parsed AST, and then generate qualifier constraints that are solved by a general-purpose back end. It has been used to find a number of security bugs in the Linux kernel.
video

Dennis Strelow

Robust motion from monocular image measurements would be an enabling technology for Mars rover, micro air vehicle, and search and rescue robot navigation; and for modeling complex environments from video.
While algorithms exist for estimating six degree of freedom motion from monocular image measurements, motion from image measurements suffers from inherent problems. These include sensitivity to incorrect or insufficient image feature tracking; sensitivity to camera modeling and calibration errors; and long-term drift in scenarios with missing observations, i.e., where image features enter and leave the field of view.
The integration of image and inertial measurements is an attractive solution to some of these problems. Among other advantages, adding inertial measurements to image-based motion estimation can reduce the sensitivity to incorrect image feature tracking and camera modeling errors. On the other hand, image measurements can be exploited to reduce the drift that results from integrating noisy inertial measurements; and allow the additional unknowns needed to interpret inertial measurements, such as the gravity direction and magnitude, to be estimated.
video

ABSTRACT

Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity predicted results that were so incredible that even he did not accept them: space is expanding from a Big Bang, space itself contains an energy that is pulling the Universe apart from within, and deep chasms of gravity called black holes actually exist. Astonishingly, all of these wild ideas are now known to be true. But now we need to build on Einstein’s work to take the next step — to study the underlying physics of the very phenomena that came out of his theories. NASA’s Beyond Einstein program consists of a series of space missions, large and small, that push Einstein’s theories to their limits, using increasingly more sensitive probes. The two flagship missions now in development, Constellation-X and LISA, will explore extremes of space, measuring X-rays and gravitational waves. The smaller missions, the Einstein probes, will target specific science questions such as "What is Dark Energy?" and "What powered the Big Bang?"

Randall Smith is an X-ray Astrophysicist at the Johns Hopkins University and NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. He worked at the Chandra X-ray Center for six years after the launch of the Chandra X-ray Observatory before moving to JHU & NASA to work with the Suzaku X-ray Telescope.
ABSTRACT

Andrew will present a broad look at the trends in recent changes in the Linux kernel: what areas of kernel functionality are people working on, and what changes can we expect to see over the next year ?

This feature-by-feature walk-through will be tied to an examination of the motivations of the kernel contributors: why do particular individuals and organizations choose particular things to work upon ?

He will also examine areas of the kernel which are arguably suffering from some neglect, the reasons for this and some possible corrective actions which might be taken.

Andrew will finish with a discussion of the importance of individual testers to the kernel development effort, as well as a look at the steps which a kernel tester should take to maximize the effectiveness of his or her contribution to the kernel.
video
Gregor Kiczales is Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia. His work is directed at enabling programmers to write programs that, as much as possible, look like their design.

ABSTRACT
Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is based on a radical exploration of modularity in software development. By presenting new mechanisms that enable better modularization in a number of systems, AOP is driving us to ask fundamental questions about what modularity should mean in our field. In the past, we have tended to think of modularity in terms of hierarchies of crisply defined blocks, where each block or module defines its interface with the surrounding modules.

This idea seems attractive but experience tells us that it is hard to actually get the modularity of the software we build just right. Some issues are hard to code (or design) in a single module, others just don’t seem to want to stay where you put them. Work in AOP and other areas suggests a different conception of modularity, based on crosscutting structures and a more fluid notion of module boundaries.

The talk will present existing AOP techniques and the problems they solve, as well as open practical and research problems ranging from mechanisms, to applications, to theoretical formulations and to conceptual foundations.
video

ABSTRACT
What if a debugger could allow you to simply step BACKWARDS? Instead of all that hassle with guessing where to put breakpoints and the fear of typing "continue" one too many times… What if you could simply go backwards to see what went wrong?

This is the essence of the "Omniscient Debugger" — it remembers everything that happened during the run of a program, and allows the programmer to "step backwards in time" to see what happened at any point of the program. All variable values, all objects, all method calls, all exceptions are recorded and the programmer can now look at anything that happened at any time.
video

ABSTRACT

If you wanted to undermine the technological revolution of the last 30 years, using the law, how would you do it? How would you undercut the virtuous cycle that results from access to an open network, force technological innovation into stagnation, diminish competition, create monopolies over the basic building blocks of knowledge? How many of those things are we doing now?

He is also a columnist for the Financial Times New Technology Policy Forum. His most recent books were Bound By Law — a comic book about fair use — and The Shakespeare Chronicles, a literary mystery about the authorship of Shakespeare’s works.
video

Daniel Quinlan

ROSE is a tool for building source-to-source transformation tools for the optimization of C and C++ object-oriented applications. ROSE represents a mechanism to build translators that read the user’s application source code and output highly optimized customized C++ code.

ROSE is the compiler-framework which permits library or application developers to build their own domain-specific source-to-source analyzers/translators. The specification of transformations is made as easy as possible with non-compiler people as a target audience. Custom analysis of large scale C++ applications is also simple to specify; ROSE supports a number of standard program analysis phases common to typical compilers, and is particularly focused on being easy to use. ROSE is an Open Source project, supporting large scale DOE applications and includes substantial documentation.

This talk will present ROSE, some of the uses of ROSE, and opportunities for research collaborations. We will present the ongoing work on program visualization and discuss ROSE mechanisms well suited to supporting security analysis of large scale applications.
video
