The Edubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Edubuntu Manifesto: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.

I made this video by VNCing from my XP machine over to my Edubuntu machine on my network. I recorded the VNC session using Demostudio. If there was an equally easy to use and powerful screencasting tool for Linux that offered mpeg recording then I’d use that instead. Please post your own screencasts on how to use Linux! There are so many curious people about Linux but many have never seen it in action! Make a screen cast and post your own successes, and failures, under Linux.

ABSTRACT

Wondering why developers are talking about Salesforce.com and Appexchange?

What’s the big deal? Software for sales teams? Big whoop?

Salesforce.com has pioneered a business application development and delivery model and they have proven it to the tune of thousands of business customers of all sizes who swear by them.

And why do developers care?

Because Salesforce has opened up their infrastructure for developers to leverage in building their own applications. Bang! Instant scalability and reliability!

Wow! So developers save thousands by not having to build their own data center?

Ah, but there’s more! Salesforce has created a revolutionary platform for developers to market, sell, and distribute their applications!

All On-Demand, no infrastructure required!

Now that is a big deal!

Come hear the Salesforce developer relations team talk about how it all works…

Their pioneering distribution platform: the Appexchange Their On-Demand developer platform: Apex Their developer network: Apexdeveloper network
video
October 5, 2006

David Pollak has been developing commercial software for 28 years. He founded Athena Design and wrote Mesa, the first real-time spreadsheet. David wrote Integer, the first online, collaborative spreadsheet. Since 2000, David has been developing domain specific languages for security and general web development.

ABSTRACT
David will describe a framework for developing DSLs which includes:

    * Identifying the constituents in a development project;
* Determining the costs and benefits of a DSL for a particular constituency vs. hand-coding functionality for that constituency based on interviews and specs;
* Identifying the ‘thought leader’ in a given constituency and interviewing him or her to determine the semantics of the domain;
* Determining syntax of the DSL;
* Mocking up the DSL and ‘test driving’ it with the thought leader;
* Finding appropriate integration points for the DSL into the application;
* Defining the process by with the Domain Experts will update code in the DSL (e.g., they have a web page where they can change tax calculation rules vs. they make a change to particular Ruby files as part of a development/staging/production cycle.); and
* Iterate over the semantics, syntax, and process to fully integrate Domain Experts into the development process.
video

ABSTRACT

Designed to answer the question "What am I looking at?" when standing on a hilltop or pulled over at a scenic overlook, HeyWhatsThat.com has garnered reviews like "Just when I thought I was in danger of becoming a jaded customer of the mass mapping space, here’s a site that effortlessly returns me to a state of slack-jawed wonder" (OgleEarth). In addition to peak detection and identification, it offers viewshed computations, elevation contours, elevation profiles, and integration with Google Maps and Google Earth. This talk — given by Michael Kosowsky, designer and proprieter of HeyWhatsThat.com — will focus on what it is and how it got to be that way.

ABSTRACT
Part 1 – Introduction to MySQL Cluster The NDB storage engine (MySQL Cluster) is a high-availability storage engine for MySQL. It provides synchronous replication between storage nodes and many mysql servers having a consistent view of the database. In 4.1 and 5.0 it’s a main memory database, but in 5.1 non-indexed attributes can be stored on disk. NDB also provides a lot of determinism in system resource usage. I’ll talk a bit about that.

Part 2 – New features in 5.1 including cluster to cluster replication, disk based data and a bunch of other things. anybody that is attending the mysql users conference may find this eerily familiar.
video
I’ll talk about some of my experience in using and expanding static analysis tools for defect detection. The FindBugs tool developed at the Univ. of Maryland is now being widely used, including inside Google.

I’ll give an overview of FindBugs, show some of the kinds of errors we routinely find in production code, discuss the methodology we use for enhancing and expanding FindBugs and some of the recent additions to it, discuss ways of incorporating FindBugs into your development process (such as being able to get a report of all the warnings introduced since the last release of your software), and talk about the future of static analysis, including things such as a new Java JSR to provide standard annotations for things such as @NonNull and @Tainted.
video

ABSTRACT

MythTV is a powerful open source personal video recorder. It records television off the air, plays downloaded media files, DVDs, and audio files. It also includes a web browser, RSS reader, weather applet, and much more. During this talk Michael will introduce MythTV, show off the frontend interface, MythWeb, talk about the current challenges with guide data in the United States, and discuss some of the upcoming features. Michael is a coauthor of "Practical MythTV", which was published in April 2007.

Rick Mugridge

Rick Mugridge is the lead author of the first book on storytests: "Fit for Developing Software". He has developed and is evolving FitLibrary to better support storytest driven development. He is a leading thinker and inventor in this area, and consults and coaches internationally in storytesting, executable specifications, and agile software development.

ABSTRACT
We raise four software development issues and show how Fit can be used to address them. The issues are as follows: (1) How can we improve test coverage on a legacy system without discouraging its evolution? (2) Now that we have a successful product with a great UI, how do we provide program access, such as through SOAP? (3) How can QA be involved earlier and more effectively? (4) How can product managers better utilise their expertise?

Each of these issues can be addressed with Fit storytests. Storytests satisfy the demands of both requirements and quality assurance, in an amalgam that initially looks weird and counter-intuitive. Storytests are concrete examples that express important things about the business domain and about the system. They are matched and generalised in the code, using the same "ubiquitous language". Week by week, as thinking and understanding grow and change, the storytests grow and change. And so the code evolves.
video

ABSTRACT

Although digital imaging has been around for nearly 40 years, the past decade has seen the nearly complete replacement of analog film by digital sensors, most of which capture only a tenth the dynamic range of the black and white film Ansel Adams worked with 80 years ago. Using multiple exposure techniques (or advanced sensors), it is in fact possible to turn this around and capture ten times the range of film, equalling or surpassing the capacity of human vision. Greg will introduce some of the concepts and present a few details of HDR imaging in the context of digital photography, and demonstrate interactive software he has developed to assist in the merging of bracketed exposures.
# useful properties of light and image formation
# theory and techniques of photographic optics and image capture
# theory of colorimetry and techniques of color reproduction
# where and how photography is being used in Google products and projects
# what tools exist inside Google for photographic image storage, processing, etc.
# and lots more…
video

ABSTRACT

18th anniversary of BGP. In this talk we examine the evolution of BGP over these 18 years, and look at the lessons we could learn from this.

Dr. Yakov Rekhter joined Juniper Networks in Dec 2000, where he is a Distinguished Engineer. Prior to joining Juniper, Yakov worked at Cisco Systems, where he was a Cisco Fellow. Prior to joining Cisco in 1995, he worked at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center.

Yakov Rekhter was one of the leading architects and a major software developer of the NSFNET Backbone Phase II. He co-designed the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). He was also one of the lead designers of Tag Switching, BGP/MPLS based VPNs, and MPLS Traffic Engineering. Among his most recent activities is the work on Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS). His other contributions to contemporary Internet technology include: Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) and IP address allocation for private Internets.

He is the author or co-author of over 40 IETF RFCs, and numerous papers and articles on TCP/IP and the Internet. His recent books include: "MPLS: Technology and Applications" (Morgan Kauffman, 2000) and "Switching in IP Networks: IP Switching, Tag Switching and Related Technologies" (Morgan Kauffman, 1998).
video
Dave has been studying, practicing, teaching, evangelising, and coaching XP and Agile Processes since 1998.
ABSTRACT
Test Driven Development (TDD) has become quite well known. Many developers are getting benefit from the practice. But it is possible that we can get even more value. A new practice is getting attention these days: Behaviour Driven Development (BDD).

BDD removes all vestiges of testing and instead focuses on specifying the behaviour desired in the system being built. This talk will be focus on Ruby and will introduce a new BDD framework: rSpec. The ideas, however, are language independent.
video

Google Tech Talks
August 27, 2007

ABSTRACT

Model-based testing can help to reduce the cost of testing and increase its effectiveness. Instead of designing test cases by hand, model-based testing allows a test engineer to automatically generate test cases from a model of the system under test.

After a brief overview of model-based testing, this talk will compare two different kinds of test model: black-box models and white-box models. Black-box models are easier for programmers to write and tools to use, while white-box models require more sophisticated notations and modelling skills, but can allow more sophisticated test generation.

These two styles of models will be illustrated by using two different model-based testing tools to test some example applications, such as a web-based library system. An open-source tool, ModelJUnit, will be used to illustrate test generation from several black-box test models written in Java. A commercial tool, LEIRIOS Test Designer, will be used to illustrate test generation from white-box test models written in UML

Speaker: Mark Utting

Mark Utting has been developing and using model-based testing tools since 2000. Recently, he co-authored the first industry-oriented book specifically on model-based testing, and developed the open-source ModelJUnit tool to illustrate some of the techniques in the book. He has also been a consultant for the design of commercial model-based testing tools, such as the LEIRIOS Test Designer from LEIRIOS Technologies.

Dr Utting works as an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at The University of Waikato, New Zealand. Prior to this, he worked as an analyst/programmer in the Australian software industry for several years and as a postdoctoral researcher on theorem proving and real-time refinement. His PhD was in the area of refinement calculus techniques for object-oriented programs. He is a member of the IFIP Working Group 2.3 on Programming Methodology.

ABSTRACT

Every day around the world, software developers spend much of their time working with a variety of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Some are integral to the core platform, some provide access to widely distributed frameworks, and some are written in-house for use by a few developers. Nearly all programmers occasionally function as API designers, whether they know it or not. A well-designed API can be a great asset to the organization that wrote it and to all who use it. Good APIs increase the pleasure and productivity of the developers who use them, the quality of the software they produce, and ultimately, the corporate bottom line. Conversely, poorly written APIs are a constant thorn in the developer’s side, and have been known to harm the bottom line to the point of bankruptcy. Given the importance of good API design, surprisingly little has been written on the subject. In this talk, I’ll attempt to help you recognize good and bad APIs and I’ll offer specific suggestions for writing good ones.

ABSTRACT
The history of mechanical system control is one of striving for ever greater complexity. Ironically, with the modern mechatronics era, system complexity has increased beyond the wildest dreams of the early system designers while, in many instances, the mechanical part of the system has become simpler.

Despite the mechanics/electronics of the mechatronics name, software has become the real driver for mechanical system complexity. System value and competitive advantage derive from better conceived and better executed software.

Design and implementation of control software for mechanical systems depends on: Design context Design language Implementation language Simulation environment(s) Implementation environment(s)

The process from concept to product progresses through many intermediate stages; maximizing software reuse in this process leads to enhanced productivity, more reliable products, and quicker time to market.
video

ABSTRACT
The central token of information in Chemistry is a chemical substance, an entity that can often be represented as a well-defined chemical structure. With InChI we have a means of representing this entity as a unique string of characters, which is otherwise represented by various of 2-D and 3-D chemical drawings, ‘connection tables’ and synonyms. InChI therefore represents a discrete physical entity, to which is associated as array of chemical properties and data. NIST has long been involved in disseminating chemical reference data associated with such discrete substances. A InChI is therefore the key index to this data. Many other types of data and information are also naturally tied to it, including biological information, commercial availability, toxicity, drug effectiveness and so forth. Because of the diversity of properties and interactions of a chemical substance, effective location of chemical information generally requires further qualifiers, which may be represented coarsely as a key word, but more precisely using a controlled vocabulary. There are no simple separations between information sought by difference disciplines and for different objectives. However, reference data may be organized according the disciplines most directly involved in making the measurements: -isolated substance – mass, infrared, NMR, spectra; physical properties -substance in the context of others – solubility, affinity, .. -properties of a mixture containing the substance The desired data can be a number, vector or image, usually associated with dimensions and links to source information. In some cases, this information is typically converted to a curve or diagram for use by an expert and may be further processed by specialized software. In other cases, a single numerical values is the target. Also, some complexities of structure that must be dealt with in practical search is represented in InChI, but must be decoded for use in searching.

Dan Frankowski is both computer science researcher and practitioner in software and algorithms development. He got his master’s degree in computer science from the University of Minnesota in 1993, then spent a year in Budapest on a Fulbright grant studying mathematics. From 1997 to 2003 he was an algorithms guy at Net Perceptions. From 2003 to the present, he has been a research fellow with the GroupLens research group at the Unviersity of Minnesota, which is most well-known for recommenders, but now studies online community more broadly.

ABSTRACT
In today’s data-rich networked world, people express many aspects of their lives online. It is common to segregate different aspects in different places: you might write opinionated rants about movies in your blog under a pseudonym while participating in a forum or web site for scholarly discussion of medical ethics under your real name. However, it may be possible to link these separate identities, because the movies, journal articles, or authors you mention are from a sparse relation space whose properties (e.g., many items related to by only a few users) allow re- identification. This talk examines this general problem in a specific setting: re- identification of users from a public web movie forum in a private movie ratings dataset.
video

Google Tech Talks
March 27, 2007

ABSTRACT

The relation between Google and the free software movement is one of the most important diplomatic relationships in the 21st century. But it is largely invisible, even to the principals. In this talk I will try and make some of what we have taken for granted less implicit, so we can progress with mutual confidence and collective security.

Speaker: Eben Moglen, Software Freedom Law Center

Chairman of the Software Freedom Law Center, professor of Law and Legal History at Columbia University Law School, and General Counsel of the Free Software Foundation. In addition to FSF, Professor Moglen has represented many of the world’s leading free software developers.

Professor Moglen earned his PhD in History and law degree at Yale University during what he sometimes calls his "long, dark period" in New Haven. After law school he clerked for Judge Edward Weinfeld of the United States District Court in New York City and to Justice Thurgood Marshall of the United States Supreme Court. He has taught at Columbia Law School – and has held visiting appointments at Harvard University, Tel Aviv University and the University of Virginia – since 1987. In 2003 he was given the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Pioneer Award for efforts on behalf of freedom in the electronic society. Professor Moglen is admitted to practice in the State of New York and before the United States Supreme Court.
video

ABSTRACT

This talk will discuss some of the scalability challenges that have
arisen during YouTube’s short but extraordinary history. YouTube
has grown incredibly rapidly despite having had only a handful of
people responsible for scaling the site. Topics of discussion will
include hardware scalability, software scalability, and database
scalability.

Speaker: Cuong Do
Cuong is currently an engineering manager at YouTube/Google.
He was part of the engineering team that scaled the YouTube
software and hardware infrastructure from its infancy to its current
scale. Prior to YouTube/Google, he held various software

ABSTRACT

Advanced Topics in Programming Languages: JSR-305: Java annotations for software defect detection

This talk will describe the current status of JSR-305, Java annotations for software defect detection. This JSR will define several standard Java annotations for properties such as @Nonnegative and @Nonnull that can be used to document your design intentions in a way that be interpreted by multiple software tools (such as FindBugs and IntelliJ). In addition, the talk (and JSR) will discuss the need for inherited and default JSR-305 annotations and propose a way to provide them.

We’ll also discuss our proposal to define meta-annotations, that allow anyone to define their own annotations (perhaps with associated validators) that will be treated as type qualifiers. For example, far too many old APIs use int’s or String’s where enums would have been a better choice. By defining a new type qualifier annotation, and annotating both the public static final fields that define the legal values and the parameters that require them, you can enforce a requirement that only the static fields are used to provide values to the parameters.
video

Ben Bangert works as a Senior Software Engineer in the Online Publishing Group at O’Reilly Media Inc. His fascination with technology and programming have led him to experiment with and use a variety of web technologies. Ben believes strongly in the "right tool for the right job" motto and has been adding tools to his programming belt for over 15 years.

ABSTRACT
Python’s Web Server Gateway Interface (WSGI) not only enables a multitude of Python web frameworks to share code when it comes to deployment, but also enables entirely new levels of re-use for Python web development. This talk is focused on explaining WSGI, new types of re-use with WSGI middleware, and explore new frameworks that heavily utilize WSGI; in this case, Pylons. Moving beyond monolithic frameworks that try to do everything themselves, to new modes of development where you can use just the parts you want and still have active development communities to interact with.
video

James Lyndsay
James Lyndsay is actively involved in the international software testing community. He received ‘Best Paper’ awards at the largest software testing conferences in both the US and Europe in 2002, and gave keynote talks at AsiaSTAR and STAREast in 2003. He is an invited participant in a range of influential forums, including the ISEB / ISTQB software testing certifications.

ABSTRACT
Over the last decade, we’ve seen huge changes in the ease and ubiquity of our access to information. We have vastly more power at our fingertips, and the technologies that provide that power have become commodities. However, software testing has failed to keep up with the times, and pressure is building that may lead to convulsive change.

This talk looks at the unique potential of testing to provide crucial, but otherwise undiscoverable information in an otherwise impossible timeframe – and at the split that has appeared between testing focussed on expectations, and testing focussed on the delivered system.

James Lyndsay believes that we can use our existing skills, approaches and tools to rise to these challenges, and reach a bright, but very different future.
video

ABSTRACT

The OpenMRS project is a noteworthy open source community that allows developers to directly contribute towards technology that saves lives. This community began its work in 2004 in response to HIV’s devastation upon the developing world. As home to ninety-five percent of this pandemic’s disease burden, these resource-poor locations need new health care systems that efficiently manage medical information. A quick survey of the health information technology landscape in this environment yields poor organization, many inflexible ad hoc developments, and poor potential for proper scale.

OpenMRS was designed to serve as an electronic medical record system framework shared among developers implementing in developing countries. It has grown significantly over the past couple of years, as the community learns to integrate some of the open source community’s best and brightest interested in pursuing philanthropic software development. To date, OpenMRS has been implemented in eight countries, maintains health information for over 100,000 patients, and is directly supported by organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

Speakers: Paul Biondich, Burke Mamlin
Dr. Paul Biondich is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine and part of the medical informatics investigator faculty at the Regenstrief Institute for Health Care. He cofounded this project in 2004 and today contributes to the project by helping lead the overall design direction and leading community development efforts. OpenMRS is enjoying a rapid period of growth, now utilized in the care of well over 100,000 patients in 8 countries.

Dr. Mamlin received his MD from Indiana University in 1996 and completed an internal medicine residency there as well. Dr. Mamlin continues to practices internal medicine while serving as Associate Director of Computerized Physician Order Entry at Regenstrief Institute. Dr. Mamlin contributes to OpenMRS by helping with technical leadership as well as the overall design direction of the project.
video

Tony Tyson is the Director of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. His research interests are in cosmology, dark matter, dark energy, observational optical astronomy, experimental gravitational physics, and new instrumentation. He has been a Distinguished Professor of Physics at UC Davis since 2003.

ABSTRACT
Fueled by advances in software, microelectronics, and large optics fabrication, a new type of sky survey is being designed. In a relentless campaign of 15 second exposures, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope will cover the sky to the edge of the optical universe every three nights, opening a movie-like window on objects that change or move on rapid timescales: exploding supernovae, potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroids, etc.

The superb images from the LSST will also chart billions of remote galaxies in 4-D, providing multiple probes of the mysterious Dark Matter and Dark Energy. Thirty TB of multi-color images per night will be transformed into a new view of our four dimensional universe.
video
