SQLite is a small C library that implements a self-contained, embeddable, zero-configuration SQL database engine. SQLite implements a large subset of SQL-92 and stores a complete database in a single disk file. The library footprint is less than 250 KB making is suitable for use in embedded devices and applications where memory space is scarce.

This talk provides a quick overview of SQLite, its history, its strengths and weaknesses, and describes situations where it is much more useful than a traditional client/server database. The talk concludes with a discussion of the lessons learned from the development of SQLite and how those lessons can be applied to other projects.
video

ABSTRACT
The desirability of making IP networking easy to use has been obvious for many years, but achieving that goal has proved elusive. One day, Stuart Cheshire got tired of fellow Stanford Computer Science PhD students wanting to print from his Mac (via AppleTalk) because they couldn’t work out how to configure their Linux /etc/printcap files to access the network printer they wanted to use via IP, and he decided it was time someone did something about it.

Thus began a long saga, beginning with the formation of the IETF "Zero Configuration Networking" working group, and ending where we are today, with widespread adoption of Stuart Cheshire’s Multicast DNS and DNS Service Discovery technology, or "Bonjour", as Apple likes to call it. Today just about every network printer from just about every printer vendor supports Bonjour, and ships with it enabled by default.
video
Linden Lab is the producer of Second Life, an online world with a growing population of subscribers (or "residents"); currently, the community has well over 140,000 residents from 91 countries. By providing residents with robust building and scripting tools, Linden Lab enables them to create a vast array of in-world objects, installations and programs. Since its early stages, Linden Lab has allowed its residents to retain full IP rights over their own creations, thereby insuring that their contributions to the community remain truly their own.
video
Part 1 – Introduction to MySQL Cluster The NDB storage engine (MySQL Cluster) is a high-availability storage engine for MySQL. It provides synchronous replication between storage nodes and many mysql servers having a consistent view of the database. In 4.1 and 5.0 it’s a main memory database, but in 5.1 non-indexed attributes can be stored on disk. NDB also provides a lot of determinism in system resource usage. I’ll talk a bit about that.

Part 2 – New features in 5.1 including cluster to cluster replication, disk based data and a bunch of other things. anybody that is attending the mysql users conference may find this eerily familiar.
video
This talk will introduce GeoServer, an open source server to publish and edit geospatial data using open standards with Google Earth, Google Maps, and more. The talk will highlight the recent the work done to interoperate with Earth and Maps, and how GeoServer fits in to the stack of software to share and collaborate around geospatial information. Also discussed will be the relevant open standards used by GeoServer, including WMS, WFS, SLD and GML, and how they were leveraged to create KML network links with the existing GeoServer core. The close of the talk will look towards the future, with more speculative questions such as what a true geospatial web might look at, and how we might apply the principles of open source to collaboratively build and maintain geospatial data (including what tools and social architectures would support a movement for collaborative geodata). Hopefully this will lead to an open discussion on turning the possibilities in to reality.
video

ABSTRACT
This talk will cover three pieces of infrastructure for writing static analyses for C++. All are available as open source. Elkhound is a Generalized LR (GLR) parser generator. Its input is a grammar augmented with reduction actions written in C++. The GLR algorithm works with any context-free grammar, even ambiguous grammars. The user provides additional actions to resolve ambiguities that may arise during parsing. Elsa is a C++ parser written using Elkhound. It solves many of the classic parsing challenges of C and C++ by using an ambiguous grammar, delaying much of the disambiguation until the type checking phase.

Not only does this lead to a cleaner design, the use of a parsing grammar lends itself naturally to language extensions, grammar fragments that pertain to specific language dialects (for example, GCC extensions). The use of extensions is ideal in a research setting. Finally, Cqual++ is a static analysis tool built on top of Elsa. It is a port of the older Cqual tool. It takes advantage of the Elsa extension mechanisms to process Cqual++ annotations, traverse the parsed AST, and then generate qualifier constraints that are solved by a general-purpose back end. It has been used to find a number of security bugs in the Linux kernel.
video
Chickenfoot is a Firefox extension that embeds a JavaScript programming environment in the browser’s sidebar. Unlike a JavaScript shell that simply supplies access to the DOM of a webpage, Chickenfoot provides users with a high-level API, making web scripting accessible to end-user programmers as well as hackers. In this talk we will present the design and implementation of Chickenfoot; in particular, our novel technique of using keyword patterns to identify page components. We will also demonstrate how to use Chickenfoot for debugging webapps and creating rapid prototypes. In fact, we’ll write a Firefox extension in under a minute, or your money back.
video

ABSTRACT
It all started out as a place to share physics documents, but has grown into potentially mankind’s largest and most complex creation. The World Wide Web is a lot of things – a soapbox for everyone, a giant shopping mall, an application platform, and unfortunately a hacker’s playground.

As more applications get "web-ified" moving from the desktop or legacy systems onto the web, attackers follow the vulnerabilities. Without sophisticated tools or "1337 5x1llz", web applications are now the most attacked technology, with the majority of attacks categorized as "easily exploitable".

So, before your application is placed out into one of the most hostile environments, how do you stop your software from being "0wn3d" by the 14 year old in their blacked-out bedroom, or being used by a Russian crime cartel?

In this TechTalk, Mike Andrews will look at how web applications are attacked, walk through a testing framework for evaluating the security of an application and take some deep-dives into a few interesting and common vulnerabilities and how they can be exploited.
video
But a lot of these solutions only appeal to a small niche. What goes into a service that appeals to a broad range of people?

How can it start and grow without a generous helping of capital? The two guys behind BillMonk.com, a service for helping friends with the casual borrowing of money and stuff, will share their views from the trenches. They will share the story of what it took to quit their comfy jobs at Amazon, how a handful of philosophical axioms dictated the entire site design and interface, anthropological observations about the 18-26 year-old demographic with respect to money and computers, and some of the technical challenges they’ve faced. There will be room for discussion about Ruby, Linux, when to open-source parts of your platform, and business lessons for geeks.
video
A grassroots movement is on the verge of sweeping through the academic world. The "open access movement" is based on a set of intuitions that are shared by a remarkably wide range of academics: that knowledge should be free and open to use and re-use; that collaboration should be easier, not harder; that people should receive credit and kudos for contributing to education and research; and that concepts and ideas are linked in unusual and surprising ways and not the simple linear forms that textbooks present.

In this talk, we will overview Connexions (cnx.org), a non-profit start-up launched at Rice University in 1999 that aims to reinvent how we write, edit, publish, and use textbooks.
video

Han Reiser

Hans Reiser was concerned that hierarchical and relational naming systems add structure not inherent in the information, and that boolean algebra fails to represent structure, and so he develeoped a set of semantics which attempt to match rather than mold structure.

He then founded Namesys in 1993 when he went to Russia and hired a small team of programmers to implement the storage layer for these semantics, known as the Reiserfs filesystem for Linux. He spent 5 years arguing over algorithms on evenings and weekends, and working day jobs in Silicon Valley, and then finally the code started to work well enough that he could quit the day jobs.

Then he took all the code, chucked it, and rewrote it from scratch to reflect what he had learned the first time doing it. The new code is called Reiser4.

ABSTRACT
The ReiserFS project aims to add support for semi-structured data querying to the filesystem namespace. Reiser4 is the storage layer for this. It stores all files in a dancing (not balanced)tree, and is currently the overall fastest filesystem for traditional filesystem usage patterns.
video
XML11 is an XML-based protocol that allows asynchronous UI updates of widgets to an end-device. To overcome high-latency connections, XML11 allows migration of application logic to the end-device.

The prototype implementation of XML11 runs in any standard web browser without Java capabilities on the client-side and replaces AWT/Swing on the server-side. This also allows us to expose legacy AWT/Swing applications as web applications. Ultimately XML11 can be used for writing Ajax applications withoutrequiring any JavaScript knowledge. The prototype implementation of XML11 is released under the GPL and available at www.xml11.org
video
